Hurricane Survivor Work
Hurricanes Katrina and Rita:
I had the great opportunity to work with the Baptist Child and Family Services group in San Antonio, Texas, the week after Hurricane Rita hit the Gulf Coast. My intention was to do trauma and loss recovery and survival work with Katrina evacuees; little did I know that the shelters would be filling again with new evacuees from southern Texas and Louisiana by the time I arrived. Lucky for me I was joined by a colleague and friend, Barb Dorrington. Together, we faced many new challenges, learned from our experiences and hopefully helped some of the kids and adults through a very traumatic event in their lives. I also have included here a link to a PowerPoint slideshow, a labour of love and a bit of my own personal therapy, after this amazing voyage - you will see artwork done by survivors, young and old evacuees, volunteers and staff, interspersed with photos taken of our experiences. Mandalas proved to be very therapeutic for all, you'll see some wonderful ones here! Beware, the file is very large and may take time to download, I might suggest you save it to your hard drive. For those of you not interested in the download, most of the pictures in the powerpoint are included below.
